The Tour begins in Padang, capital of West Sumatra. Famous for its spicy cuisine and traditional Minang culture, the bustling busy city of Padang is gateway to the Minang highlands. Home to West Sumatra’s biggest port, the docks at Padang are constantly filled with ships transporting everything from cinammon and nutmeg to coffee and cement. As the first stage of the Tour makes it’s way through the city, cyclists will pass by buildings in the traditional style of architecture. These distinctive buildings add character and charm to this noisy city. Cyclists will pass over the Batang Arau river not once, but twice, giving specators the chance to see the quaint collection of boats and hand paddled ferries that line the riverside. The first stage of the Tour will finish where it started, in the centre of town at Taman Budaya, the culture park where visitors can learn all about traditional Minang culture.
